5R Program for Gut Health

Our digestive tract is home to a large community of microbes. There is a growing understanding that our gut microbes are key human health. They are not limited to digestive functions but are also key to immune and neural health.

Digestive issues are common. A 2016 Mintel report suggested that 86% of all British adults had experienced some form of gastro-intestinal (GI) problem in the previous year. The top three digestive issues were wind, bloating or flatulence (62%), indigestion (53%) and diarrhoea (50%).

The 5R program seeks to understand the source of your digestive issues and help you re-balance your digestive tract in order to alleviate symptoms and improve digestive health and wellbeing. The 5R program has five themes:

Remove: identify and remove triggers which could be contributing to your symptoms. These triggers could be dietary, environmental or lifestyle in origin.

Replace: identify those elements which may be missing and introduce them back into your life. These could be specific macro or micro-nutrients or activities like stress management or physical exercise.

Repair: identify possible damage from injury or inflammatory processes. Support the protective barriers of the digestive tract from your stomach acid to the lining the digestive tract to aid repair.

Re-inoculate: support and nourish the diversity of your community of gut microbes in order to promote their health and by association your long term well-being.

Re-balance: the digestive tract is influenced by numerous factors: diet, stress, physical activity, sleep and hydration, to name a few. Considering you and your life as a whole, will be an important part of the 5R program, so that you can find the balance you need to lead a happy and healthy life.

More information

The 5R Program is a min. 12 week program. It will personalised to your needs depending on your symptoms and circumstances. The results of the 5R program are improved if functional testing, such as stool analyses, is undertaken since the results enable better targeting of the approach. However, functional testing is not a prerequisite.
